# Payment statuses

> What each status means and what your system should do.

Only `Paid` means the money is yours. Everything else is either still in progress or a reason not to fulfil.

| Status | Meaning | What to do |
| - | - | - |
| `Created` | The payment exists. The customer has not opened a wallet yet. | Nothing. |
| `Pending` | The customer picked a wallet. Paywit is waiting for the funds. | Nothing. |
| `Bridging` | The customer paid on another chain and the funds are crossing to your wallet. Never expires. | Nothing. Keep waiting. |
| `Paid` | USDC arrived in your settlement wallet. Final. | Fulfil the order. You also get `payment.paid`. |
| `Expired` | The window closed before funds arrived. | Mark the order unpaid. You also get `payment.expired`. |
| `Failed` | Funds arrived but did not match the request. | Do not fulfil. You also get `payment.failed`. Contact support if it repeats. |
| `DestinationMismatch` | Funds went to a different account than the one requested. | Treat as failed. |
| `AssetMismatch` | A different asset arrived. | Treat as failed. |
| `AmountMismatch` | A different amount arrived. | Treat as failed. |

Treat the list as open and ignore values you do not recognise.

## Reading the status

Webhooks tell you about the final states. For the in-between ones, for example to show the customer a "waiting for your wallet" screen when they come back to your site, fetch the payment:

No key is needed. The response deliberately leaves out merchant data such as your app id and client reference id, so it is safe to call from a browser.

> Do not fulfil orders from this call. Use the `payment.paid` webhook, which is signed and retried.
